The Upper East Region is located in the northeastern corner of Ghana, bordering Burkina Faso to the north and Togo to the east. The region covers an area of approximately 8,842 square kilometers. Bolgatanga serves as the regional capital.
The name Bolgatanga (Bolbatanga) was derived from the Gerunsi words "Boole" Clay and "tanga" rocks. The Bolgatanga land, therefore, has a mixture of clay and other rock formations and this encapsulates what exists in the entire Upper East Region in terms of topography.
The climate is generally hot and dry, with a single rainy season lasting from May to October.
The Upper East Region has a rich and diverse history, with various ethnic groups. The region is predominantly agricultural, with crops such as maize, millet, rice and sorghum being major staples. The region is also known for its livestock production, including cattle, goats, Guinea fowl and sheep. Aside this, the region is widely know for the production of baskets, calabash making and Fugu ( smock weaving).
In addition to agriculture, the region has significant deposits of minerals, including gold, granite, and sandstone. The Region is endowed with vast granite deposits, with approximately 80% of its rocks containing granite. This presents a significant opportunity for rock exploration and exploitation. Polished natural granite from the region can be transformed into high-value products, such as tiles and monuments, commanding premium prices. Additionally, granite can be used for road construction, while other rocks in the region can be harnessed for cement production, building materials, bath scrub, and gravel for road construction. The region is also home to economic mineral deposits, including gold, diamond, and manganese.
The upper east region region is also home to several manufacturing industries, including textiles, food processing, and construction materials.
The Upper Quarry Limited, established in 1980, was the first quarry in the region and has been extracting muscovite-biotite granite rock, suitable for crushed and broken stone, concrete aggregate, and road surfacing material.
The Upper East Region has several tourist attractions, including; the Tongo Hills, the Bolgatanga Market which is a marketplace that sells local crafts, textiles, and foodstuffs, the Paga Crocodile Pond, the bolgatanga museum , the Pwalugu dam ( white Volta ) and the craft village.

The Upper East Region has several infrastructural projects and a rich cultural heritage, with various ethnic groups such as the Grunsi , Kusaasi, Kasena etc. The region has great delicacies like Tuo - zaafi and excellent plantations like the baobab tree, tamarind tree and shea tree.
